Common Network Issues in Ageing Buildings and How to Solve Them

Older buildings often carry a sense of history, but they can also bring a host of challenges when it comes to communications infrastructure. Many schools, hospitals and clubs in NSW still operate with cabling systems installed decades ago. As technology advances, these outdated networks begin to show their limitations.
At Shamrock Communications, we frequently help clients in ageing buildings modernise their systems without needing to start from scratch. Here are the most common issues we see and how we address them.

1. Outdated Cabling Types
CAT 5 and older cable types are still surprisingly common in older facilities. These cables are not capable of supporting modern speeds, devices or Power over Ethernet (PoE) technologies. They result in slow performance, dropped connections and increased downtime.
Solution: We upgrade these systems to CAT 6A, which supports faster speeds, greater bandwidth and future scalability.

2. Poor Comms Room Setup
In many older buildings, the communications rooms have evolved with patchwork fixes and little planning. Racks may be overcrowded, cables unlabelled or patch panels left in disarray. This slows fault finding and increases the risk of accidental disconnections.
Solution: We provide comms room audits and tidy-ups. This includes consolidating patch panels, labelling cables and organising equipment to meet modern standards.

3. Inadequate Wireless Coverage
Buildings designed before Wi-Fi was standard often lack the layout or infrastructure needed for proper wireless coverage. This results in dead zones and overburdened access points.
Solution: We design and install wireless access points in strategic locations, supported by upgraded cabling to ensure strong, consistent connectivity.

4. Lack of Documentation
Many older networks were never properly documented. This makes maintenance time-consuming and risky.
Solution: We provide comprehensive documentation during upgrades, including labelled cables, test results and comms room diagrams.
